A place of retreat

In 1912, at an altitude of 1,800 metres above sea level, the Austrian monarchy built a doctors’ residence here as an annex for the planned neighbouring sanatorium, protected by trees that date back hundreds of years. With its large loggias, stone foundations and wooden façades, the structure followed the tradition of Alpine villa architecture that was influenced by the European Art Nouveau movement.

After careful restoration of the historic building, the remodelled villa is now a private retreat for up to ten people.

    Accommodation

The energy of the forest and the sunlight of the Dolomites pervade the historic rooms of the villa from morning to night. The living space, covering an area of 1,200 m2, extends over several floors and the spa.

The stone cellar offers space for events or exhibitions; it also has its own cellar for storing wine and smoked hams. The ground floor features a living room with fireplace, a kitchen and a breakfast and dining room; the first floor offers a master bedroom, master bathroom, dressing room and two more bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.

On the open top floor, under the original wooden beams dating from 1912, there is a large living area with home cinema and lounge, as well as two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

    Culinary

The villa has a fully equipped kitchen supplied every morning with fresh food from local farms. The centrepiece of the kitchen is a block of dolomite stone with a stove and large working surface, with space for cooking together. A private chef is always available to prepare individually chosen menus.

  • FOR Villa Pool

    Spa

Inspired by the natural teachings of the Celtic druids, the private spa is oriented towards the area’s rich natural resources. The pure Plose spring water, the mountain air, the long hours of sunshine and the mild climate form the four cornerstones of the spa.

There are coaches available to guests for meditation, yoga or Wyda (the breathing and movement theory of the Celts), as well as therapists for massages. The spa has a large heated indoor-outdoor pool, a massage room with a bathtub for two and a large rain shower, a sauna and a steam bath, a quiet room with fireplace, as well as a gymnasium with Technogym equipment.

    Garden

Amidst the mixed natural forests of the Plose mountain, trees, some hundreds of years old, surround the private natural garden of the villa in the forest; the vista meanwhile opens up over the valley towards the Dolomites. This south-facing area also enjoys all-day sunshine. On warmer days, the focus moves outdoors to the garden, 1,000 m2 in size, with its outdoor cooking area, barbecue, herb garden, spring water fountain, pool and lounge. At the edge of the forest can be found the natural vegetation of the Alpine regions: wild berries, ferns, mosses and mushrooms. In winter, a trail leads directly to and from the ski piste.

Sleep and regeneration

Like the villa’s other historic rooms, the five large bedrooms with their en suite bathrooms reflect the tradition of villa construction in the mountains, one that dates back over a century. The great variety of materials employed was characteristic of the era. Depending on availability, different types of wood such as larch, Swiss stone pine or spruce were used to make the hand-hewn beams, manually crafted floors and furniture. These untreated woods create a room climate in the faithfully restored bedroom suites that has favourable effects on the regenerative power of sleep.

Architecture

The origins of the villa date back to the year 1912, when the Austrian monarchy planned a sanatorium with an adjacent doctors’ residence. With its carved ornamentation and large loggias, the building recalls the Austrian architectural heritage of the second half of the 19th century and the Art Nouveau style. The stone foundations and wooden façade are in keeping with the traditional design of Alpine holiday residences.

The extensive restoration of the villa, which had previously stood idle for decades, was intended to recreate the original character of the historic building. Working with conservationists and restorers from a wide range of trades, the villa’s structural elements, beams, floors, furniture, windows and doors were all restored or faithfully recreated by hand in accordance with the methods of the time, based on the villa’s construction plans dating from the early 20th century. The bathrooms and spa complement the historic interior, with their linear forms, high-quality materials and warm colours all blending into the villa’s overall concept.
